Sabir is the common maritime language of the Mediterranean. It was formed in the 11th century and survived until the 19th. It was based on Italian dialects, Occitan, Provençal and later Spanish. It also borrowed many elements from Greek, Turkish and Arabic. Its use was widespread among sailors, merchants and those who worked in Mediterranean ports and bridged the linguistic gap between Mediterranean cultures.
